Pleated Effect for Background

Create an attractive addition for use in an image.

My Abbreviations of PhotoImpact commands are thus: R/c = Right click (or other click whichever you use)

Commands separated with a forward slash (/) = the order of the commands or the options within a command.

This was done in PI 10 but other versions could be used

Rating: Beginner

Filters needed: Filters Unlimited/ Special Effects 1

FM Tile Tools/ Blend Emboss.

  Tools Used: FadeOut Transform Tool

Before you begin decide on an Image/Tube you are going to use. Select a background color from the image using the Color on Screen Option

1. Open New Image 300x300.

2. Edit/Fill with Color of your Creation Background

3. Using your Selection Tool/ Rectangle Soft Edge 0

4. Draw a rectangle on your canvas about 200x 40

5. Open Filters Unlimited/ Special Effects1/Venetian Blinds Horizontal.

Use these settings: Density 35 Shading 33

6. Effect/FM Tile Tools/Blend Emboss. Use Default Settings

7. Edit/Fade-Out with these settings

We shall call this Layer 1.

Tip!! You will notice that it looks white beneath your blinds but that is ok.

8. R/C Duplicate

9. Select your Transform Tool /Rotate and Flip Horizontally.

10. Using your Pick Tool drag this layer (Layer2) down your canvas. Repeat with the first layer. (Don't be concerned if they are too wide for your canvas.)

11. Line both layers up evenly so they join together.

12. One layer should still be selected so R/C Select All Layers

13. R/C Merge as a Single Object

14. Go Back to your Transform Tool. Unlock the Padlock and resize the blinds horizontally.

If the blinds were too big for your canvas you will have to drag them off to one side of the canvas to find the transform nodes.

15. Once you are happy with the size Flip and rotate Vertically

16. R/C Duplicate. Move this Layer down using the Down Arrow key on your keyboard. You need for this layer to be not under the upper layer but overlapping it by 1-2 slats.
17. Leaving the transform padlock unlocked pull down to resize larger. This opens the slats and gives more depth. This step is optional.

18. Again using the left or right arrow key move this layer to the side a bit.

I have selected all objects so you can better see what I mean:

19. Repeat Step 16 once more.

You can of course arrange these 3 layers to your own preference

20. R/C Select All Objects

21. R/C Merge as a Single Object.

22. Optional: Photo/ Sharpen and choose the first option on the box that opens.

23.. Optional: Shadow in a color to compliment.

That's it!!

Now you can use your Blinds as you wish. Just drag it or copy and paste it into a new image.

Hope you enjoyed this Tutorial

Another option for this effect is to lower the number of slats in Filters Unlimited. The image below was done using just 2 slats and then using Transform/ Distort. But again :) I urge you to *play*
